AHMET YESEVİ AND FUAT KOPRULU YEAR FROM UNESCO

United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) will declare 2016-2017 as Ahmet Yesevi and Fuat Köprülü Year and will organize events.

850th death anniversary of Ahmet Yesevi and 50th death anniversary of Fuat Köprülü will be globally commemorated due to proposal presented by UNESCO Turkish National Commission and got approval. It was stated that a major figure for intercultural dialogue, convergence of cultures and peace symbols, UNESCO particularly values Ahmet Yesevi’s teaching on gender equality. The importance of Fuat Köprülü, recognized as a symbol of tolerance alongside Ahmet Yesevi and him introducing Ahmet Yesevi to Turkish literature with his work titled ‘First Sufis in Turkish Literature’ were emphasized. The proposals presented by member states in UNESCO General Conference held once every two years to commemorate “role models in the history with contributions in humanity” should be endorsed by at least four countries and the figures are required to mark the
cultural legacy of respective countries.
